The Last Booking Before the Keys Go Back to the Landlord
The final week of a long stay fills up faster than any other, and the guests who get a good last evening are the ones who plan it before the week begins.
Everyone who has done a long stay knows how the last week goes. It starts with good intentions and a list of places not yet visited. By Wednesday it has become a sequence of handovers, farewells, a landlord's inspection and the discovery that three months of living produced more belongings than one suitcase can hold. The evenings disappear first. A final booked evening, meant as a way to close the stay, is often the thing that gets squeezed out.
Plan it the week before
The plain defence is to book the last evening before the last week begins. Once the week has started, every free evening gets claimed by something else. Written a week ahead, the booking carries half the fee in advance, which is the usual rule for anything arranged more than twenty-four hours before its start. For a guest who has booked through the whole stay, that deposit is by now a familiar step.
Not the last night
The last night itself is rarely the right choice. It belongs to packing, a final check of the flat and an early night before the flight. Guests who have done this before recommend the second or third evening from the end: the farewells are behind you, the suitcase is started but not urgent, and there is still a day to recover. If the flight is early, count back from it and leave a full night of sleep between the booking and the alarm.
Asking for someone you know
Over a long stay, most guests book the same therapist at least twice, and the final booking is often a request for her again. Name her in the first line of the message. The reply says whether she is free, and if not, who is. Because the last week leaves little room to move a date, writing several days ahead improves the chance that the name you ask for is free.
A longer evening
Some guests use the last week for a longer booking than any they made during the stay: two hours at EUR 360, three at EUR 540, or the eight hour overnight at EUR 1,250 with one therapist. Three hours and the overnight carry half ahead in every case. The overnight in particular sits well two or three nights before departure, when there is a day free afterwards, rather than on the eve of a flight.
The inspection
Many long-stay rentals end with an inspection, and the last week is not the time to discover how the landlord feels about oil on the sofa. Formats that stay on the bed are the sensible choice. She brings her own towels and protects the bed with them, and takes them away afterwards. If you have already handed the keys back and moved to a hotel for the final nights, the booking works the same way, with the room number in place of the flat address and the same forty to sixty minute arrival anywhere in central Amsterdam.
The thread you leave behind
By the last week the booking thread holds a record of the whole stay: the address in the form that worked, the names you booked, the lengths and the dates. You are not obliged to keep it, and the house removes its copy twelve months after the last message, as the privacy page explains. If you expect to come back for another posting, the one thing worth noting is the name of anyone you would like to book again.
If the plans change
Final weeks are unpredictable. A flight moves, a handover overruns, an inspection gets brought forward. A booking can move once without cost if you ask more than twenty-four hours before the booked time and the new date is within fourteen days, though in the last week there may be no date left to move to. Cancelled more than a day ahead, the whole deposit returns. Inside the final day, before she has left, half is kept. Once she is on her way, all of it is kept, unless someone else takes the hour.
A night near Schiphol
Some stays end with a night at an airport hotel before an early departure. A booking there is arranged separately: the journey time is agreed with you first, and half the fee goes ahead in every case. Write a few days before, give the hotel and room, and mention when the flight leaves so that the booking can sit comfortably before sleep.
A last evening that was planned is one that happens. It is worth the ten minutes it takes to arrange before the week that would otherwise swallow it.
