Couples massage covers any booking where two guests are in the room. On a long stay it usually happens when a partner flies in for a week or a long weekend to see where the other has been living. There are two ways to book it. One therapist can work with both of you, taking turns or sharing the session, at 360 euros an hour. Or each of you can have a therapist of your own, working side by side, at 720 an hour. The second needs more space and more notice. Either way, both guests must be twenty-one or over and both must want the booking; the house takes a couple booking only when both have agreed to it.
Where it comes from
Couples suites appeared in hotel spas around the turn of the century, when resorts began designing treatment rooms with two tables side by side. The in-room version keeps the idea of a shared session and removes the spa around it.
How it is worked
With one therapist, the session alternates between the two guests or moves between them at a pace she sets. With two, each works with one guest, usually in the same room. Each therapist decides her part of the session within her own limits.
What the hour holds
She arrives, or they arrive, and there is a short conversation about how the session will run and in which order. With one therapist, one of you usually waits while the other begins. With two, both sessions run together. Each therapist names her limits at the start, and they apply for the whole visit. The booking ends at the time agreed.
