Learning Your Own Body Over a Season of Massages

A long stay leaves time to try several formats a few weeks apart and learn what actually suits you, which a single short trip never allows.

A visitor on a short trip chooses one massage format, books it once and hopes it was the right choice. A guest spending a season in Amsterdam has an advantage they rarely think about: time to experiment. Over three or six months, it is possible to try several formats, at several lengths, and learn from experience which ones work. Few people ever get that chance at home, where habit and convenience tend to settle the question early.

Starting simple

Most long-stay guests begin with an oil massage or sensual massage at an hour or ninety minutes. These formats stay on the bed, ask nothing of the bathroom, and suit a flat that is still being learned. They also give a baseline. After the first two or three bookings, a guest knows how their body responds to a slow, even pace and to firm or light pressure, and whether an hour feels complete or feels cut short.

The second step

From that baseline, the next step is usually either longer or slower. Longer means ninety minutes becoming two hours, which changes the shape of a session more than the extra time implies: the opening stretch loosens, the middle has room, and nothing feels rushed. Slower means a format such as tantra massage, where the pace itself is the point and the first half hour can feel almost static. Tantra needs ninety minutes or more to find its rhythm, and on a long stay it tends to appear around the second month.

Water and gel

Formats built around water or gel, such as nuru and soapy massage, are usually the third step, because they depend on the flat. They need a bathroom with room for two, a shower that runs hot for long enough, and a guest who knows the building well enough not to worry about the neighbours. On a long stay, these formats tend to appear in the second or third month, if at all. If the flat is not suited to them, a hotel room with a large bathroom can be a better place, and some long-stay guests book a night in a hotel precisely for that.

Two therapists

A four hand session, with two therapists working at once, is the format long-stay guests usually keep for an occasion. It costs EUR 360 an hour, EUR 540 for ninety minutes and EUR 720 for two hours, always carries half the fee ahead, and needs notice because two diaries have to clear the same hours. It tends to be booked once in a stay, for a birthday or the end of a project, and guests who try it usually have a clear view afterwards on whether it is for them.

Keeping notes

A few guests on long stays keep a short note after each booking: the format, the length, the time of day and a line on how it felt. It sounds a little clinical, but after two months the notes show patterns that memory alone does not. An hour on a weeknight felt rushed three times out of four. A Sunday afternoon at ninety minutes worked every time. A particular therapist's pace suited you on some evenings more than on others. The notes are private and go nowhere, but they make the next choice easier.

What you learn

By the end of a season of bookings, most guests can say with some confidence what suits them: which pace, which length, which kind of pressure, which time of day. That knowledge travels. It shapes what they book on later trips and what they look for at home. It is one of the quieter benefits of living somewhere for a while rather than passing through.

What does not change as you learn

Experimenting with formats does not change who decides what a session includes. Each therapist sets her own limits and states them at the start of each visit, and she may decline a booking or end a visit whenever she chooses. A format name is a description of a style, not a list of what will happen. The techniques page describes each format in general terms; the detail belongs to her.

The rates stay fixed through all of it. An hour with one therapist is EUR 180 whichever format you choose, and the profile of each therapist carries the full table.
